Pictures you won’t see in the NYTimes…but should

By anesig

There is a large spectrum of reasonable political debate surrounding wars, and more so specifically because innocent lives are basically always at risk. Within this spectrum, I may disagree with many opinions but I respect them as well reasoned. After all, reasonable people can always disagree over reasonable issues.

Then, there are those that lie outside of reasonable debate. The likes have them have appearing more and more at the demonstrations surrounding the escalation of violence in the Middle East. Bloggers have done a particularly good job of making sure these photos get good play, including Andrew Sullivan who has made a point of showing pictures that somehow don’t end up in the mainstream media despite their significance.

These pictures capture just a few scenes from this weekend’s “peace” rally in San Francisco. Those who have reasoned objections to what is going on in the Middle East should make sure that the people in these pictures know they are not welcome.

I doubt war is very reasonable in the first place, including the debate about innocent deaths. The whole thing is pretty damn emotional.
If there is any excuse for the banners those people use to protest, it is that they probably thought very hard about what they were doing. Remember the pseudo-Nazi Youth fiasco in the Reynold’s Club last winter? The so called “shock effect” is what is operating in these protests–to no good effect at all. Yet, I don’t think this invalidates the anti-war cause.

I’m gonna RESCIND MOST OF MY COMMENT ABOVE after seeing more photos from the protest. Sure, maybe the protesters thought extensively about what they were doing. Problem is they were blind in their thinking, just as I was blind in my knowledge of the consistent anti-semetic theme of the protest.
Am I still against the war(s)? Yes; I’d rather not see things like this happen ever, for any reason (which I doubt there are any that you can toss beyond a tombstone).
